This week in Jack Jack's World.
22 Weeks Pregnant

How Big is JackJack at 22 Weeks Pregnant?

Compared to Jack's first weeks of life, Jack at pregnancy week 22 is now a giant! At more 10.9 inches long Jack weighs over 15 ounces during pregnancy 22 weeks!

Jack's Development at Week 22 of Pregnancy

At this point in your pregnancy, Jack's brain and nerve endings are formed just enough so that the baby can feel touch! During week 22 of pregnancy, your baby may experiment with this newfound sense of touch by stroking his or her face or sucking on a thumb. Your baby may also begin to feel other body parts to see how they move.
Other fetal development that is occurring when you are about 22 weeks pregnant includes the following:
  • The eyelids and eyebrows become well developed.
  • The development of fingernails is completed.
  • Taste buds have started to form on the tongue.
  • For boys, testes have begun to descend from the abdomen to the scrotum.
  • For girls, the uterus and ovaries are in place and the vagina is developed. At this point, a girl will have about 7 million eggs in her ovaries, which will drop down to about 2 million when she is born.
  • The liver is starting to break down bilirubin, which is a substance found in red blood cells. Once broken down by the liver, bilirubin is removed from the body through the intestines.

Note To All The Non-Pregnant People Of The World

Dear Non-Pregnant Person,

I hope you find these guidelines helpful in your interactions with pregnant women, as failing to follow them may result in serious physical harm. If you are thinking, surely she doesn’t mean me – then you should probably read this twice.

1. The appropriate response to a couple telling you they are having a baby is ‘Congratulations!’ with enthusiasm. Any other response makes you a jerk.

2. Through the wonders of science, we now know that babies are made ONLY by the mother and father – not grandparents. Unless the baby is in your uterus or you are the man that helped put it there, you may not ever use the phrase ‘my baby’.

3. On the same note, unless you made the baby as defined in 2, the pregnancy, birth, and raising of the child are not about you. You do not have input. No one wants to hear your opinion unless they ask for it…

4. The body of a pregnant woman should be treated the same as any other body. You would not randomly touch someone’s stomach if they were not pregnant, nor would you inquire into the condition of their uterus, cervix, or how they plan to use their breasts. Pregnancy does not remove all traces of privacy from a woman.

5. Likewise, no woman wants to hear comments on her weight…ever. A pregnant woman does not find it flattering that you think she is about is pop, must be having twins, looks swollen or has gained weight in her face. Telling her she looks too small only makes her worry that she is somehow starving her baby. Making such comments invite her to critique your physical appearance and you may not act offended. The only acceptable comment on appearance is ‘You look fabulous!’.

6. By the time we are 20-30 years old, most of us have picked up on the fact that the summer is hot. We are hot every summer when we are not pregnant. We don’t need you to point out that we will be miserably hot before the baby comes. Nor do we need to know how badly you will feel for us because we will be pregnant during the summer and how glad you are that YOU will not be pregnant this coming summer.

7. There is a reason that tickets to Labor & Delivery are not yet sold on Ticketmaster. Childbirth is actually not a public event. It may sound crazy, but some women really do not relish the idea of their mother, MIL, or a host of other family members seeing their bare butt and genitals. Also, some people simply feel like the birth of their child is a private and emotional moment to be shared only by the parents. You weren’t invited to be there when the baby was created, you probably won’t be invited to be there when it comes out either.

8. Like everything else in life, unless you receive an invitation, you are NOT invited. This includes doctor appointments, ultrasounds, labor, delivery, the hospital, and the parent’s home. You do not decide if you will be there for the birth or if you will move in with the new parents to ‘help out’. If your assistance is desired, rest assured that you will be asked for it.

9. If you are asked to help after the birth, this means you should clean up the house, help with cooking meals, and generally stay out of the way. Holding the baby more than the parents, interfering with breastfeeding and sleeping schedules, and making a woman who is still leaking fluid from multiple locations lift a finger in housework is not helping.

10. The only people entitled to time with the baby are the parents. Whether they choose to have you at the hospital for the birth or ask for you to wait three weeks to visit, appreciate that you are being given the privilege of seeing their child. Complaining or showing disappointment only encourages the parents to include you less.

Sincerely,

All the Pregnant Women in the World

This week in JackJack's world:
21 Weeks Pregnant

How Big is Jack at 21 Weeks Pregnant?
Jack now weighs over 12.7 ounces and is a little larger than 10 1/2 inches long or about the length of a full banana by now! .

JackJack's Development at Week 21 of Pregnancy

Although at 21 weeks pregnant most of Jack's nourishment still comes from you (through the placenta), his intestines have developed enough so that small amounts of water and sugars can be absorbed from the amniotic fluid he swallows. This fluid will be passed through Jack's digestive system to the large bowel (but no further at this point).
Other fetal development occurring in Jack around 21 weeks of pregnancy includes the following:
  • The continued maturation of body parts, tissues, and organs
  • The heart grows stronger and the legs reach their relative proportions
  • Vernix caseosa -- a protective skin covering -- is still being produced by your baby's oil glands
  • The brown fat that your baby started producing back in the 4th month of pregnancy is now beginning to build up in places like the chest, crotch, and neck; this will help maintain body temperature
  • Buds for permanent teeth are beginning to form.
Up until now, Jack's liver and spleen have been responsible for the production of blood cells. The fetal liver produces blood cells right up until the time of birth. However, now the bone marrow spaces are developed enough to contribute to blood cell formation as well.

Lets Talk About The Kiddo's

It's been a long time since I just jotted down some things about the kids. I think sometimes I just over analyze it and then get frustrated and so I don't do it. But Lets just keep this simple.

Samuel...

Started 1st grade this year! Can you believe that? Everyone is having somewhat of a hard time adjusting to him being gone most the day. But we have him on the early shift, so he goes from 8-2:30. It is sooooo nice. There is time for playing and relaxing, then homework, dinner and bed time.

He was having a hard day during the first week, and I asked him what was wrong. He told me that no one would play with him at recess.... After I recovered from the inside emotional heartbreak, I calmly asked him a few questions as to why no one would play with him. I asked him If he asked anyone to play with him, in which he told me that he did not, and he just wandered around the playground by himself. I told him that he needed to ask people if they wanted to play in which he responded to me by saying that He thought the older kids maybe thought he was a too slow. I told him that the older kids might not want to play with him because he isn't in their same age group and that he needed to ask someone his own age. I then said "There's got to be someone in your class that likes the same things as you. Like batman and starwars lego's" and he responded that he did have a friend that liked starwars lego's. So I told him that before recess started to ask that little boy if he wanted to play with him. He came home that next day. and seemed upset again. I asked him what was wrong. He told me that he had asked the little boy to play and he said yes. But when the little boy ran off to tell his other friends he was going to play with Samuel, another kid accidentally knocked Samuel down. He said he spent the rest of recess hiding behind a tree crying. Heartbreaking! So I told him I was sorry that happened, how great it was that the little boy wanted to play with him and that he needed to try again tomorrow. So the next day he got off the bus and you could just see his smile beaming from a mile away. And at a million words per-minute he proceeded to tell us about his super awesome day of playing Starwars with this kid and another little friend.
He seems to be adjusting just fine now.

His other favorite things is he gets to ride the elevator by himself. The principal took all the handicap kids in the school and did a little class to show them how to use the elevator. He showed me how he does it when I went to volunteer in his classroom.

Samuel's favorite subject in school is math. He picks it up so easily. He is just like his daddy. His favorite color is green, he loves to play video games just as much as ever. He loves to play with his little starwars guys. He is a really great big brother and takes really good care of his sister and brother.

Aidan

Aidan was going to go into headstart this year. But I decided that I wanted to keep him home.
Less chance of him getting H1N1 or some cold related to RSV that winds us up in the hospital. We have been doing some little bits of homeschooling. learning our letters, colors and cutting paper. He already knows them pretty well, but it never hurts to practice. His speech is getting better. Its more articulation then anything else. So I've just been researching techniques to help him with that. What really helps is a lot of repetitiveness and reading books. I am thinking about asking our Neurologist if she thinks he needs some speech therapy. But I am guess not.

Aidan is so funny with things. He loves the old time cartoons, like Pink Panther and the old bugs bunny cartoons. Paul found him the other day watching the old Batman TV show. He has to do everything his big brother does, and like everything his big brother likes. I love it. They are so close and I have gotten countless compliments on how well they get along. They just love eachother. They have a really special bond. Aidan gets up every morning to see Samuel off to school.
(I actually found it quite funny today because the whole family was up finding Samuel socks and giving him hugs and kisses before he left. Hes not loved at all...)

Aidan is still our blankie kid, it has to be a soft plush blanket. His favorite is his Transformer Blanket that Santa brought him last year. It is a tragedy when we have to wash it. Luckily its almost Halloween so he will settle for his Ghost blankie when his other is not available.

He has been eating like crazy. His favorites are popcorn, spaghetti, pizza and lasagna. Something about tomato sauce I guess haha.

Betty
Our little daredevil in a princess dress. She keeps us on our toes for sure. I don't even know where to start with her because she picks up something new everyday. Her vocabulary is amazing and sometimes I forget how old she is. She seriously talks as well as Samuel rightnow! And you really have to watch what you say, because she is a major parrot.
We are working on our colors, and she is picking them up pretty fast. Her abc's we are having a little trouble with, but practice makes perfect.
She definitely has an attitude of a princess. The other day we were having clean up time. and Betty wandered into my sisters room. My sister said "Aren't you supposed to be cleaning?" and she turned to my sister, huffed and said "No. I am the princess" My sister loves to give us a hard time about her princess attitude, funny thing is she is the one that encourages it the most.
This princess thing has really been helping out with potty training her. We told her that princesses don't wear diapers, and they dont pee in their panties. They only pee on the potty. And man has this done wonders. This morning she took her diaper off and threw it in the garbage, then told me she wanted panties on. She has not had an accident yet today. She didn't have one at all yesterday. And she even had clothes on! Because that is our other struggle rightnow. She will go all day with out one accident. The second you put clothes on her, she will have an accident. But we are slowly but surely getting that taken care of .

We also recently started working on cutting paper..
(Can we say Chuckie? haha)And man I was laughing so hard I was crying.
The face she makes is priceless.

Whenever she opens the scissors her mouth opens, to dang funny.

Another little cute story about Betty is when we went in for our ultrasound, the doctor got to the babies heart and turned on the sound. We listened for a minute, then he moved on. Well a few seconds later you hear Betty making the wooshing noise. It was so stinking cute!
Also her favorite thing to do is give me raspberries on my stomach. I am pretty sure it scares the crap out of Jack-Jack, because it makes him squirm like crazy.

This week in Jack-Jack's world:

How Big is Jack-Jack at 20 Weeks Pregnant?
By pregnancy week 20 Jack-Jack is now almost 10 to 11 ounces and is 10 inches long!
About the size of a cantaloupe The pregnancy week by week changes occurring at this stage are truly remarkable. Note - starting at 20 weeks length measurements are calculated from Jack-Jack's head to it's toes.

Jack-Jack's Development at Week 20 of Pregnancy

Jack-Jack is starting to grow hair on his head! Other fetal development that typically takes place around week 20 of pregnancy includes the following:
  • A protective, waxy skin covering (called vernix caseosa) is forming to protect the baby's skin from the amniotic fluid
  • Delicate eyebrows are forming
  • If your baby is a girl, her uterus is starting to develop
  • Your baby's skin is thickening and developing layers, including the dermis, epidermis, and subcutaneous layer
  • Nail growth begins.

Update on Betty's Broken Arm

Went to the doctors today, and she did so good once again with the xrays. After xrays we came up and they took off her cast. She was sooo good for it. The saw was loud, and I would have been scared, but not her, She just watched the nurse take it off. The doctor came in and said it was mostly filled in, but he didn't think she needed a cast anymore. Then he said that he wanted to make her a splint just because HE didn't trust her. YEAH TRY LIVING WITH HER! So she just has to wear the splint for a week and mostly just when going outside to play. Which means a real bath! I am sure she will enjoy every minute of that.

First picture with out "casty"

19 weeks

Only 142 days to go.
This week was full of hormonal rage!!! haha. It's weeks like these that make this pregnancy seem like its going on and on. But we get past things right. Baby still kicking up a storm, just wish he wouldn't kick so low OW!

This week in babies world:

19 Weeks Pregnant

How Big is the Baby at 19 Weeks Pregnant?
By pregnancy week 19 your baby may be as big as 6 inches long and may weigh up to 8.5ounces!
About the size of a Mango Between 19 weeks pregnant and the time you deliver your baby it will increase in size by more than 15 times! The growth that occurs each week by week from here on out is truly remarkable.

Baby's Development at Week 19 of Pregnancy

You are 19 weeks pregnant, and baby has become a complex human being! Baby is also getting a lot more active. Although he or she is still sleeping most of the time, there are periods of activity when your baby is kicking, turning, twisting, moving its arms, wiggling its fingers and toes, and punching. You still may not be able to feel any of these movements.
Other fetal development that is occurring when you are 19 weeks pregnant includes the following:
  • Your baby is developing millions of motor neurons, which are nerves that connect the muscles to the brain
  • Parts of the leg have now grown in proportion to the rest of the body
  • Skin is developing and is transparent, appearing red because blood vessels are visible through it
  • A creamy, white, protective coating called vernix (also known as vernix caseosa) begins to develop, which protects your baby's skin from its aquatic environment and helps prevent delicate skin from becoming chapped or scratched
  • The placenta continues to grow and nourish the baby.

18 weeks

ONLY 148 days to go
Well this week seems to have flown by. Lots of kicks and flip flops from baby. Lots of hormones raging and lots of late night trips to the potty! But I wouldn't trade it for nothing. I love late nights with Daddy talking to my belly, and feeling baby react. Its Awesome =]

This week in babies world:
18 Weeks Pregnant
How Big is the Baby at 18 Weeks Pregnant?
By 18 weeks pregnant your baby is now 5.6 inches long and weighs 6.7 ounces!
About the size of a bell pepper

Baby's Development at Week 18 of Pregnancy

By the time you are 18 weeks pregnant, baby starts to produce feces and stores it in the colon. Just think -- he or she is starting to save up for all of those diapers you will be changing! Other fetal development occurring around week 18 of pregnancy includes the following:
  • The skeleton can be clearly outlined in the ultrasound of the fetus
  • Ears stand out from the head
  • Lanugo (soft, fine hair) covers the entire body
  • Pads (the fatty, soft parts) are forming on the fingertips and toes
  • The eyes are looking forward rather than out the sides of the head
  • If your baby is a boy, his prostate gland is beginning to develop
  • Your baby's bones begin to harden, or ossify -- keep up that calcium!
  • Your baby's taste buds are beginning to develop, allowing them to distinguish sweet from bitter.
Baby is hearing fairly well during week 18, because the bones in the inner ear and the nerve endings from the brain will have developed. This means that your baby will hear sounds such as your heartbeat and blood moving through the umbilical cord.
